More samples of “realistic” digital painting practice
on January 21, 2009 at 1:51 amSofie Thorne is an original character I made for a Utena-based RP. She’s blind, much too short for her age (14), and is quite skilled in music, especially the flute. Recently I made a digital painting of her just for fun:

Then, I was assigned a “superhero style” cover for my Electronic Cover Illustration class, so rather than draw a guy in spandex prancing about NYC, I decided to re-tool Sofie as a blind, echolocating, singing superhero named “Nightingale”. And the story is set in modern Amsterdam. It’s about time we had some young/disabled/European superheroes, goddamnit. Then maybe I’d actually READ superhero comics. XD

I’d love to actually make this a comic someday. So many ideas, so little time…

-woah.-
Holy cow.
I actually kind of started when I saw that, that’s -so- -cool-. O_O!!! you can totally feel the sort linger in time right before she falls… at least, that’s how I saw it, hope I didn’t mis-translate it or anything. x.x (if I did, it’s not you, I only woke up 4 minutes ago.)
Love the comic, btw. =] just got started on it a few days ago and it’s already on the list I check daily (even though, like most of them on there, it only updated two days a week.. lmao. XD)
And the other picture is amazing too… so soft. <3 I love her shoulder/neck/collarbone area. ^^!
I LOVE the Nightingale concept, and these pages are gorgeous! Please, please develop it further.
Wow. Both of those are AWESOME and I love the second one
Love the nightingale one. Crop it a little vertically and you’ve got a great CD case insert cover too. Makes me think that after you finally do develop the concept, it’s the kind of project that would have a very cool soundtrack.
I’m publishing a novel on my blog (click my name if curious – current chapter has 2 vampires and 2 mortals in the 2nd ring of Hell) and got to link out to songs at imeem (and a youtube video) when I mentioned them in the current chapter, which I thought was a neat way to enhance the scene. Jarrett Osborne also picks a song to accompany each strip over at Someday Hero.
Sorry, just got music on my mind. Anyhoo, I found this via Giz’s recommendation on MenageA3 and really dug the comic. I’ve added you to my “my yahoo” and I’m looking forward to more Sister Claire.
And of course, she’s a rising idol always in danger of having her true identity discovered whenever she fights crime! Just messing. You have a pretty good concept going. You could take it so many different ways; I almost want to read it now.
Have you tried reading Daredevil? Or Teen Titans? Granted, European superheroes aren’t exactly in plentiful supply, but Daredevil has had some of the best comic writers out there put in a few stories. Check out the Daredevil Visionaries line, it’s a collection of the best stuff.
DO IT… after Sister Claire ends, of course…
This song might fit in on that soundtrack Greg Bulmash was waxing hypothetical about: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qUNfNMWK82E
Hey, this is pretty sweet! I’ll add it to my playlist… I DID actually make one for this story.
Here’s a classical song that would really appeal to the main character:
And in a totally different genre of music, I imagined a music video to this one:
Your art is pretty cool, you’re very good. I like doing the same thing you do – digital painting characters from RPG sites (or just characters I came up with lol)
And as for the young/disable/european heros..I’m not sure if theres a characters thats all of that but Dear Devil and Echo are both disabled (DD is blind and E is deaf) And there are loads of characters all over the world. I think you should read them so you can get some inspriation for some more hero characters.
You’re very good at it.
Thanks, Lori! Yeah, I know about DD, but I’ve never heard of Echo. Upon doing some research, I was pleased to learn that she’s also part Cherokee! That’s pretty awesome.
But yes, like you pointed out, I kind of wanted to make a character who was disabled and young AND European. Just to be weird. XD
I love the sense of suspense in the Nightingale picture and her calm atitude along with how you made so many different textures with almost monochromatic colors. The small details, such as the treble cleft on her belt, are also really interesting. Please try to find time in the future to create this story and develop the character, I absolutely agree that there are not enough superheroes out there who are young, disabled, and European, so I would love to read it.;D
Ooh just checked the new pages then decided to look through the older comments and stuff, glad I did cause I absolutely LOVE the Nightingale picture, the concept of the new comic is also really appealing =D I strongly recommend you give it a shot. Also feel like doing fanarts XD But I’ll have to learn how to draw Gabriel’s hair first XD *phail*
I’m looking forward to seeing how this works out. I am really enjoying these concepts and Sister Clair. It’s very solid. ^_^ OH and BTW Found you through Project Wonderful AND SeQaLab!
