A concept design for Pele, inspired by my visit to Hawaii. She is the ill-tempered goddess of volcanoes. I think my favorite thing about her legends is how all of them inevitably end with her getting pissed off and killing everyone with molten lava. Fun fact: Pele is the only Hawaiian diety still openly worshiped.

Nice! I love your art style, Yam. It’s very unique, and yet the PPG inspiration shows through beautifully. I love your ASL videos, too. My brother is hearing impaired, so even though with his hearing aids he can hear well enough, I still know a TINY bit of Sign Language. Only thing I really know is the finger spelling, and you’re a lot faster at it than I am. But I’m working on it! ^_^
The inventor of the “Rocks fall, everyone dies” trope.
foreign (sorta, since Hawaii’s part of the US) deities roxxorz. I’d love to see your take on Shiva, Vishnu, or Kaali
When you see a trail of magma that seemingly pops outta nowhere… Turn around and run. xD;
Remember not to bring home any lava rocks, she might get mad at you.
Remember, she’s the youngest of 7 sisters so her ‘ill temperament’ has sometimes been interrupted as being slightly spoiled. And not everyone dies in her stories, just the men. She usually ends up losing to her older sisters when she throws down with them.
But yeah, she’s a fun goddess as long as you don’t get too close to her. If not, better have that gin and cigarettes ready!
Love the drawing of Pele! I’ve heard that if an old woman begs you for a cigarette, give her one. It could be Pele! Well…at least, that’s what I’ve heard. :p Pele has such a sad story, though. It’s no wonder she got so pissed off and became the goddess of volcanoes.
Umm, Pele is traditionally imagined as blonde. If you go up to the caldera you can find “Pele’s hair”, yellow-gold strands of volcanic glass.
