Heading to BD Angouleme!

I’m right now putting together my portfolio of posters, sample comics, and business cards in preparation for my 6 hour train ride to Angouleme tomorrow. It’s the biggest annual comics event in Europe, and this is the first time I’ve ever been able to attend! =) Since my artwork is already taking up most of the space in my small suitcase, and my clothes are taking up the other half, I decided against taking my laptop with me. It’ll be a lot safer while traveling through the Paris train station, which I have had some unfortunate experiences in. If I can, I’ll update from my host family’s computer, or on Twitter via my iPod Touch if I get any wireless. Otherwise, i might disappear for a few days, but fear not! I’ll be sure to return with photos and stories. ;D

I’m really looking forward to also meeting with other SCAD students, since the Sequential Art major of my college is having an offcampus trip to the same event!

For now, thanks for being patient with the late updates, I’m doing the best with everything that’s going on right now to keep working on the next pages. Love you all, and see you again in a few days! =)

HUEG UPDATE!!1

Just as suddenly as it came, all my bad juju seems to be disappearing in one day. In the last few hours, I got a phone call that my computer had been totally fixed! New board, new battery, it’s practically fresh from the factory all over again. I fully expect it to sparkly gaily during our happy reunion tomorrow morning.

This means NEW SISTER CLAIRE PAGE COMING AT YOU TOMORROW! Because it was practically done when the computer crashed, it won’t take me long to finish it.

And best of all, I HAVE A PLACE TO STAY IN ANGOULEME! I send out emails to pretty much every host offering a room in their house in Angouleme, and she was one of the first to reply. She sounds like a great person! She even offered to pick me up at the train station, and she’s already hosting two other comic artists visiting for the same con, so it should be awesome. =)

Last but not least, my band is gearing up to enter a contest for an upcoming videogame, and not to toot our own horn, but I’m pretty sure we’re going to blast the competition out of the water with our submission. We’re going way overboard with all the work we’re putting into it, so I’m pretty sure we have a good chance of landing a feature in the game. FOR FREEN!

It’s a great time to get a shirt, because *I* just ordered a blue one for myself, and I have to say, I like it even better than the black. (It’s closer to my original vision, too!)

Also, here are some pictures of the sample books I got printed for the editors in Angouleme! Notice the big “PREVIEW VERSION” stickers. XD These books are in black and white, and only contain the pages that are up on the site so far. They’re just prototypes to show what the final book will look like. The back also contains never before seen concept art, including some for unannounced characters appearing way off in the future. These will be included in the first OFFICIAL print of the book as well! =)

ASIANIM 09 + BD Collines Oct.

This was one busy weekend! Saturday I took the train to Liege to attend the annual ASIANIM, and then on Saturday I was a guest artist once more at monthly BD Collines, run by my friend Dominique. And I took my camera! =)

Before I even got to the con, I admired the brand new Liege train station, which looks more like a space station. Then, I took the bus to ASIANIM. They had some really interesting things going on! Rather than just a standard anime con, it’s meant to be educational about general Japanese culture, too. There were some gorgeous papercraft stands, a tea ceremony lesson, martial arts demonstrations, and purikura booths.

But the best part for me was probably the quite unexpected Avatar: the Last Airbender promo booth, set up completely unofficially by a group of French-speaking fans banding together to promote the series. While it’s been dubbed in French, the dubbing is really bad, and it’s never played on TV. The dedicated folks over at Avatar Realms.net have been subbing the English version and organize online and then go to cons to promote the series. They should be paid for this! Rock on, guys. I even got to meet one of my favorite characters. <3 And then later, Mai showed up, along with her… Earth King boyfriend!? I guess Mai wanted to upgrade from “banished Prince.”

I also met a lot of awesome people, including my new friend Maurizio, a blind Italian guy who wants to help me with Nightingale! He lives in Brussels too, to we ended up taking the bus, train, and subway home together, and it was very interesting company. I look forward to meeting him again soon! Of course, I also met a lot of fellow artists, and even procured some Sister Claire art from them! Sadly, I am having a LOT of trouble finding a simple WordPress plugin to let me make nice galleries of images in my posts. I would have rather posted thumbnails, but the automatic formatting is starting to drive me insane!

Next, I went to BD Collines on Sunday. I brought 5 new prints, including my Nightingale poster, and some Avatar fanarts:
Funnily enough, the Ty Lee Sketchdump poster sold best, despite nobody there even KNOWING Avatar! And people also requested a lot of sketches of her than of any of my own characters! I found that amusing. XD Here are the sketches I made for people:

This never ceases to amaze me, seeing my posters/sketches framed next those done by actually famous, popular people.:

Still, I’m not complaining! My favorite thing about Belgium is that people here really respect comic artists, and art in general. When people hear that I draw comics, they’re genuinely impressed. In the US, I’d usually get a chuckle and then, “But, seriously, when are you getting a real job?” =P I suppose it’s that lingering influence that makes me feel inadequate when my art is put alongside that of longtime pros. I still have a long way to go to measure up to them. =)
