So, you wanted some concept art! I don’t want to give away too much of the story, so I won’t tell you who this lady is… but those of you with some background knowledge of Asian mythology may have a vague idea. I wasn’t exactly accurate with the costume, though, so good luck. XD
Isn’t it adorable!? He does some really interesting and random pixelated animations over at Pixel Pandemonium, including evil animated desserts and kitty burgers! It’s so cute, you might NOT be able to resist eating pussy (although Claire might never forgive you!)
And now, for the grand unveiling of…..
Finally, you guys can interact outside of just the comment section. And hopefully I can better communicate with you, too. =)
AND! I have uploaded a buttload of older concept art into the Gallery. Enjoy!
So, Editor’s Day is coming up here at SCAD, and I’m planning to pitch this Dutch Blind Superhero story to DC and Marvel. That calls for a it more concept art, so here’s what I’ve been cooking up lately. (If you’re unfamiliar with this story, check the Nightingale tag at the bottom of this post, or click here.)
First off, another cover, this one is not totally polished, but I think it gets the idea across. It’s Sofie, without her Nightingale getup:
Next, two character designs. The first is Emily, Sofie’s deaf cousin, and Jack, Sofie’s guardian/bodyguard/butler. (Yes, I’m aware he looks rather effeminate… this is what I get for drawing cute girls too much! I’ll fix him up.)
And a few environment concepts- An average street in Amsterdam, and Sofie’s mansion:
I really need to figure out the story rather than make lots of random pictures for this. But that’s all I can come up with at the moment… my brain is fried as far as realistic storytelling goes. Maybe once I’m settled down in Brussels and have some time to think without all this stress I can get into it. In the meantime…. concept art!
I made this sketch today while listening to some of my classical music. I think it would be cool if all of the chapters were related to some famous classical music. I purposefully misinterpreted the meaning of this one to be much more morbid, though.
Also, that girl isn’t the main character, some poor unnamed dead girl floating in the Donau river. And yes, that is edelweiss!
I made these characters a while back for a comic collab with a friend that was eventually canceled. It was about a group of schoolgirls (each one was based off a member of the Beatles) who were in an acting club, and they would put on plays and have your usual crazy schoolgirl drama, but with a lot of silly musical references.
Since the project has been dropped, I still find myself thinking about it from time to time, and wondering how I could somehow incorporate the characters into Sister Claire somehow. Even if I don’t, I thought you might enjoy this old art anyway. XD
To take a break from all the typing (which I found out is actually harming me a lot more than the drawing, judging by how much more my hand hurts when I avoid drawing and instead type all day) I’ve been taking a lot of trips out lately.
First off, since I believe this is what most of you are interested in, here are some crappy sketches I’ve been making during my downtime. Don’t worry, these each take just a few minutes or less, so they haven’t stressed my hand. I apologise for the awful quality, I took these with my Macbook cam in a dark room. Consider them potential sneak peeks. XD “Potential” because they are still very deep in the concept stage and may or may not appear in the far future of Sister Claire.
Today I went to Antwerp with my family, and I’ve brought back a lot of interesting pictures. August 24th is the “Festival of the Giants,” but sadly I didn’t catch them.
However, I DID see a very interesting thing I’ve never seen before: a geese parade.
I also went to see a gorgeous church called St. Catharine, which had several beautiful painted triptychs, including some by Reubens. But you know what a sucker I am for crazy candy colors! (And glowing colors are even better.) What I loved most were the stained glass windows and detailed paintings using gold paint:
My brother thought this trinket in the church’s store looked kind of like a toilet. I had to agree. Maybe I should stock them in the Sister Claire store? XD I also snapped a photo of this really sexy Pope. (I think he was a Pope. maybe he was a Cardinal?) Whatever. Still hot, right? Bonus: I found their secret stash of Sacred Oil. Oooooh.
I’m a big fan of the urban decay aesthetic, but also natural reclamation. Most old European cities have it to some extent, but these really old cities seem to encourage it.
Another thing that was new to me: A double-decker horse-drawn buggy!
On to the photos! This is a famous statue in Verona, where I spent most of the 3 days visiting family. The statue holds a stone ball, and it’s said that if a truly honest person walks underneath it, he will drop the ball on their head. As you can see, it’s still there… After that, a photo of the Alpine countryside I walked in with my family. That place is used for skiing in the winter, when it’s covered with snow, but right now the only thing covering it is rocks and cows. Last but not least, the Verona colosseum! (Rome isn’t the only Italian city that has one!) Built during the reign of Augustus, this colosseum is also used as a traditional Opera stage.
These next pics were taken in Malchesine, a gorgeous town on the edge of Lago di Garda. (Garda Lake) It’s so picturesque and labyrinthine. The landscape Claire lives in is inspired by a mixture of Tuscany and this place, although we have yet to see the town near her abbey. =) The first picture is of a mountain dubbed”Napoleon’s Nose.” Can you see the profile silhouetted?
I also took these pics at my other relative’s house near Verona. They have a really cute cat named “Sandy”… they named him after the squirrel in Spongebob. XD
An interesting sign advertising ‘Nternet and Fooo.
Last but not least, a few random sketches I did during the trip!
As those of you following my Twitter already know, I’ve been reading a lot of the manga “Fairy Tail” lately. As it is with most series I read/watch there’s only one character I really care about who keeps me reading/watching, and in this case, it’s Erza. Oh Erza! You’ve rekindled my flame for Princely Girls! Ever since Utena I’ve had a small obsession.
In any case, I decided it was time to dig up an old character design for a Sister Claire character I’d long forgotten about, and re-design her. Because every decent story should have a Princely Girl!
More concept art for Nightingale. Man, I wish I had a clone of me to work on this while my other self keeps doing Sister Claire. They are so drastically different in pretty much every way.
Also, new Sister Catharine Cubees! I have revamped the format to ALL the Cubees to PDF, so now everyone should be able to download them and print them without problem. Click the picture to go to the Cubee page. Have fun! =)
