So I was browsing this awesome portfolio belonging to a SCAD alumni (whoo, Scaddies!) named Erica Reis, who is the creator of Sea Princess Azuri (published by Tokyopop.) I don’t know how many of you know this by now, but I am a huge mermaid fan. <3

She’s made some really gorgeous and original mermaid designs, particularly the holiday-themed mermaids (St. Patrick’s is my favorite!), but also many other fish as mermaids. (More of these can be found at her main website, under Background Characters and Species.) Overall a really well-done site with lots of information and concept art. I would definitely check it out, especially if you’re an aspiring comic artist. Along with her work with Tokyopop, it looks like she’s also working on the official Finding Nemo comic. You can see more of her artwork and updates over at her deviantart page. =)

Speaking of mermaids, I realized I never posted the mermaid drawings I did this winter:

So, while I was on Erica’s site, I also found a link she’d put to this amazing site that sells mermaid tails. Their site is… well, not the most aesthetically pleasing, but it does the job. Mostly I liked it for the links on the right-hand side to all the photoshoots of models wearing the mermaid tails.

Beware, though. Some of the photos look like this:

Ok, so some of you may be wondering what all these finals were that were taking me so long! At long last you can see what I was working on all this time.

Comics Painting: 4 Page Mixed Media project

I had to make a 4 page comic using mixed media… meaning more than just paint. I really went all out on this, even cutting off some of my own hair. (Hell, I needed a haircut anyway.) Some other materials used in this were the inside of an apple chip bag, plaster wrap for making casts, paper towels, cotton, papier-mâché, ink, watercolor, colored pencils, and acrylic.

Here are two other painted comics I did for the same class. This one was mostly scripted: A man with a briefcase walks through a field of wheat, surrounded by black birds. He finds a barn, heads towards it, opens that door, and… we got to decide what was inside. We were also limited to only 5 acrylic colors specified by the teacher.

This next two page comic was also mostly scripted for us. A couple (any type) are walking down a post apocalyptic beach, when one of them decides to check out a cave while the other one waits outside. Character A goes in, Character B hears a scream, Character A comes running out… and again, we get to decide what was inside. Sadly, I never got to finish this watercolor project, but I think I like these characters enough to include them in another story. =)

Other painting work I did this quarter:

This is a painting with a Little Red Riding Hood theme that I made for my Water Based media class. Unfortunately, the photo quality isn’t that great. The innuendo was accidental at first, but once I saw it there I had to play it up. If she reminds you of someone, you may recall a blind character I posted some digital paintings of before, Sofie Thorne. That’s who I modeled her after. =)

And this was my first watercolor project, a still life which I photographed myself using miscellaneous things on my desk. =)

I thought you might find it interesting to see what I’m doing when I’m not working on Sister Claire. XD I don’t know if I developed a real taste for painting, but at least I’m over my phobia of it now.

Oh my GAWD you guys! Check out this monster update!

I finally managed to upload my second tutorial! I’m sorry it took so long, guys! T_T

And here’s some new artwork, from Hae-Hime and Stromphe! (I need Stromphe to give me her drawings so I can post them!) We all went out to get some bubble tea tonight and ended up all drawing Gabrielle being tied up. Don’t ask me why… it just happened.

I’ll scan these properly later, but I thought they were so funny I just had to share.

Oh, and check this out! I have been looking for a new wallet ever since mine was stolen in London this summer. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find any that didn’t have Hannah Montana all over it. So, I decided to make one to match my handbag…. made of DUCT TAPE! Note that I didn’t make the bag. Only the wallet.

Here are some photos of my duct tape bag and matching wallet, and all the amazing features it has: a pocket for my passport, a transparent window for my ID, a coin pocket with a flap, and 3 credit card pockets! =D
